The Israelites Confess Their Sins
1. Now in the twenty and fourth day of this month the children of Israel were assembled with fasting, and with sackclothes, and earth upon them.
1. Le vingt-quatrième jour du même mois, les enfants d`Israël s`assemblèrent, revêtus de sacs et couverts de poussière, pour la célébration d`un jeûne.

2. And the seed of Israel separated themselves from all strangers, and stood and confessed their sins, and the iniquities of their fathers.
2. Ceux qui étaient de la race d`Israël, s`étant séparés de tous les étrangers, se présentèrent et confessèrent leurs péchés et les iniquités de leurs pères.
2. Dia niavaka tamin' ny vahiny rehetra ny taranak' Isiraely ary ni-tsangana ka niaiky ny fahotany sy ny heloky ny razany.
3. And they stood up in their place, and read in the book of the law of the LORD their God one fourth part of the day; and another fourth part they confessed, and worshipped the LORD their God.
3. "Lorsqu`ils furent placés, on lut dans le livre de la loi de l`Éternel, leur Dieu, pendant un quart de la journée; et pendant un autre quart ils confessèrent leurs péchés et se prosternèrent devant l`Éternel, leur Dieu."
3. "Ary nitsangana teo amin' ny fitoerany avy izy, dia namaky tao amin' ny bokin' ny lalàn' i Jehovah Andriamaniny tamin' ny ampahefatry ny andro; ary tamin' ny ampahefatry ny andro dia niaiky sy niankohoka tamin' i Jehovah Andriamaniny izy."
4. Then stood up upon the stairs, of the Levites, Jeshua, and Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani, and Chenani, and cried with a loud voice unto the LORD their God.
4. Josué, Bani, Kadmiel, Schebania, Bunni, Schérébia, Bani et Kenani montèrent sur l`estrade des Lévites et crièrent à haute voix vers l`Éternel, leur Dieu.
4. Ary Jesoa sy Bany sy Kadmiela sy Sebania sy Bony sy Serebia sy Bany ary Kenany dia nitsangana teo ambonin' ny lampihazon' ny Levita ka nitaraina mafy tamin' i Jehovah Andriamaniny.
5. Then the Levites, Jeshua, and Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabniah, Sherebiah, Hodijah, Shebaniah, and Pethahiah, said, Stand up and bless the LORD your God for ever and ever: and blessed be thy glorious name, which is exalted above all blessing and praise.
5. Et les Lévites Josué, Kadmiel, Bani, Haschabnia, Schérébia, Hodija, Schebania et Pethachja, dirent: Levez-vous, bénissez l`Éternel, votre Dieu, d`éternité en éternité! Que l`on bénisse ton nom glorieux, qui est au-dessus de toute bénédiction et de toute louange!
5. Ary hoy ny Levita, dia Jesoa sy Kadmiela sy Bany sy Hasabnia sy Serebia sy Hodia sy Sebania ary Petahia: Mitsangàna, ka misaora an' i Jehovah Andriamanitrareo mandrakizay mandrakizay. Ary isaorana anie ny Anaranao malaza, izay voasandratra ambonin' ny fisaorana sy ny fiderana rehetra.
6. Thou, even thou, art LORD alone; thou hast made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth, and all things that are therein, the seas, and all that is therein, and thou preservest them all; and the host of heaven worshippeth thee.
6. C`est toi, Éternel, toi seul, qui as fait les cieux, les cieux des cieux et toute leur armée, la terre et tout ce qui est sur elle, les mers et tout ce qu`elles renferment. Tu donnes la vie à toutes ces choses, et l`armée des cieux se prosterne devant toi.
6. "Ianao dia Ianao irery ihany no Jehovah; Ianao no nanao ny lanitra, dia ny lanitry ny lanitra, mbamin' izay rehetra any aminy, ny tany sy izay rehetra eo aminy, ny ranomasina sy izay rehetra ao aminy, ary Ianao no mitahiry azy rehetra; ary ireo maro any an-danitra dia samy miankohoka eo aminao."
7. Thou art the LORD the God, who didst choose Abram, and broughtest him forth out of Ur of the Chaldees, and gavest him the name of Abraham;
7. C`est toi, Éternel Dieu, qui as choisi Abram, qui l`as fait sortir d`Ur en Chaldée, et qui lui as donné le nom d`Abraham.
7. "Ianao no Jehovah Andriamanitra, izay nifidy an' i Abrama ka nitondra azy nivoaka avy tany Oran' ny Kaldeana sady nanao ny anarany hoe Abrahama;"
8. And foundest his heart faithful before thee, and madest a covenant with him to give the land of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Jebusites, and the Girgashites, to give it, I say, to his seed, and hast performed thy words; for thou art righteous:
8. Tu trouvas son coeur fidèle devant toi, tu fis alliance avec lui, et tu promis de donner à sa postérité le pays des Cananéens, des Héthiens, des Amoréens, des Phéréziens, des Jébusiens et des Guirgasiens. Et tu as tenu ta parole, car tu es juste.
8. "Ary nahita ny fony Ianao fa nahatoky teo anatrehanao ka dia nanao fanekena taminy hanome ny tanin' ny Kananita sy ny Hetita sy ny Amorita sy ny Perizita sy ny Jebosita ary ny Girgasita, hanome izany, hoy aho, ho an' ny taranany; ary efa nahatanteraka ny teninao Ianao, satria marina Ianao."
9. And didst see the affliction of our fathers in Egypt, and heardest their cry by the Red sea;
9. Tu vis l`affliction de nos pères en Égypte, et tu entendis leurs cris vers la mer Rouge.
9. Ary nahita ny fahorian' ny razanay tany Egypta koa Ianao sady nandre ny fitarainany teo amoron' ny Ranomasina Mena,
10. And shewedst signs and wonders upon Pharaoh, and on all his servants, and on all the people of his land: for thou knewest that they dealt proudly against them. So didst thou get thee a name, as it is this day.
10. Tu opéras des miracles et des prodiges contre Pharaon, contre tous ses serviteurs et contre tout le peuple de son pays, parce que tu savais avec quelle méchanceté ils avaient traité nos pères, et tu fis paraître ta gloire comme elle paraît aujourd`hui.
10. "Dia nanao famantarana sy fahagagana tamin' i Farao sy ny mpanompony rehetra sy tamin' ny olona rehetra tany amin' ny taniny Ianao; fa fantatrao fa nirehareha taminy ireo; dia nanao anarana ho Anao Ianao tahaka ny amin' izao anio izao."
11. And thou didst divide the sea before them, so that they went through the midst of the sea on the dry land; and their persecutors thou threwest into the deeps, as a stone into the mighty waters.
11. "Tu fendis la mer devant eux, et ils passèrent à sec au milieu de la mer; mais tu précipitas dans l`abîme, comme une pierre au fond des eaux, ceux qui marchaient à leur poursuite."
11. "Ary ny ranomasina dia nosarahinao teo anoloany, ka dia nandeha namaky teo afovoan' ny ranomasina mandia ny tany maina izy; ary ny mpanenjika azy dia natsipinao hilentika amin' ny lalina tahaka ny vato amin' ny rano manonja."
12. Moreover thou leddest them in the day by a cloudy pillar; and in the night by a pillar of fire, to give them light in the way wherein they should go.
12. Tu les guidas le jour par une colonne de nuée, et la nuit par une colonne de feu qui les éclairait dans le chemin qu`ils avaient à suivre.
12. Andri-rahona no nitondranao azy raha antoandro, ary andri-afo nony alina, mba hampahazava azy hahitany izay lalana tokony halehany.
13. Thou camest down also upon mount Sinai, and spakest with them from heaven, and gavest them right judgments, and true laws, good statutes and commandments:
13. Tu descendis sur la montagne de Sinaï, tu leur parlas du haut des cieux, et tu leur donnas des ordonnances justes, des lois de vérité, des préceptes et des commandements excellents.
13. Efa nidina tao ambonin' ny tendrombohitra Sinay koa Ianao, dia niteny taminy avy tany an-danitra ka nanome azy fitsipika mahitsy sy lalàna marina, ary fomba fanao sy didy tsara.
14. And madest known unto them thy holy sabbath, and commandedst them precepts, statutes, and laws, by the hand of Moses thy servant:
14. Tu leur fis connaître ton saint sabbat, et tu leur prescrivis par Moïse, ton serviteur, des commandements, des préceptes et une loi.
14. Ary nampahalala azy ny sabatanao masina Ianao sy nandidy azy ireo tamin' ny fitsipika sy fomba fanao ary lalàna tamin' ny alalan' i Mosesy mpanomponao.
15. And gavest them bread from heaven for their hunger, and broughtest forth water for them out of the rock for their thirst, and promisedst them that they should go in to possess the land which thou hadst sworn to give them.
15. Tu leur donnas, du haut des cieux, du pain quand ils avaient faim, et tu fis sortir de l`eau du rocher quand ils avaient soif. Et tu leur dis d`entrer en possession du pays que tu avais juré de leur donner.
15. "Ary mofo avy tany an-danitra no nomenao azy, raha noana izy; ary rano avy tamin' ny vatolampy no navoakanao hosotroiny raha nangetaheta izy; ary nampanantena azy Ianao, fa izy ireo dia hahazo ny tany, izay nianiananao homena azy."
16. But they and our fathers dealt proudly, and hardened their necks, and hearkened not to thy commandments,
16. Mais nos pères se livrèrent à l`orgueil et raidirent leur cou. Ils n`écoutèrent point tes commandements,
16. Fa izy ireo sy ny razanay dia nirehareha sy nanamafy ny hatony ka tsy nihaino ny didinao,
17. And refused to obey, neither were mindful of thy wonders that thou didst among them; but hardened their necks, and in their rebellion appointed a captain to return to their bondage: but thou art a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and forsookest them not.
17. "ils refusèrent d`obéir, et ils mirent en oubli les merveilles que tu avais faites en leur faveur. Ils raidirent leur cou; et, dans leur rébellion, ils se donnèrent un chef pour retourner à leur servitude. Mais toi, tu es un Dieu prêt à pardonner, compatissant et miséricordieux, lent à la colère et riche en bonté, et tu ne les abandonnas pas,"
17. "Ary nandà ny hankatò sy tsy hahatsiaro ny fahagagana izay nataonao taminy; fa nanamafy ny hatony izy, ka nanendry mpitarika tamin' ny fiodinany mba hiverenany ho any amin' ny fahandevozany; fa Andriamanitra vonona ny hamela heloka Ianao, miantra sy mamindra fo, mahari-po sy be fahalemem-panahy ka tsy nahafoy azy."
18. Yea, when they had made them a molten calf, and said, This is thy God that brought thee up out of Egypt, and had wrought great provocations;
18. même quand ils se firent un veau en fonte et dirent: Voici ton Dieu qui t`a fait sortir d`Égypte, et qu`ils se livrèrent envers toi à de grands outrages.
18. "Eny, raha nanao ombilahy kely an' idina ho azy izy ka nanao hoe: Io no andriamanitrao izay nitondra anao niakatra avy tany Egypta, dia nampahasosotra indrindra izy;"
19. Yet thou in thy manifold mercies forsookest them not in the wilderness: the pillar of the cloud departed not from them by day, to lead them in the way; neither the pillar of fire by night, to shew them light, and the way wherein they should go.
19. Dans ton immense miséricorde, tu ne les abandonnas pas au désert, et la colonne de nuée ne cessa point de les guider le jour dans leur chemin, ni la colonne de feu de les éclairer la nuit dans le chemin qu`ils avaient à suivre.
19. "Kanefa noho ny haben' ny famindramponao dia tsy mba nahafoy azy tany an' efitra Ianao; ny andri-rahona, izay nitondra azy teny an-dalana, dia tsy niala taminy raha antoandro, na ny andri-afo nony alina, hahitany izay lalana tokony halehany."
20. Thou gavest also thy good spirit to instruct them, and withheldest not thy manna from their mouth, and gavest them water for their thirst.
20. Tu leur donnas ton bon esprit pour les rendre sages, tu ne refusas point ta manne à leur bouche, et tu leur fournis de l`eau pour leur soif.
20. "Ary ny Fanahinao tsara dia nomenao azy koa hampianatra azy, ary tsy niaro ny mananao tamin' ny vavany Ianao sady nanome azy rano, raha nangetaheta izy;"
21. Yea, forty years didst thou sustain them in the wilderness, so that they lacked nothing; their clothes waxed not old, and their feet swelled not.
21. Pendant quarante ans, tu pourvus à leur entretien dans le désert, et ils ne manquèrent de rien, leurs vêtements ne s`usèrent point, et leurs pieds ne s`enflèrent point.
21. "Eny, efapolo taona no namelomanao azy tany an' efitra, ka tsy nanan-java-mahory akory izy; tsy rovitra ny fitafiany, ary tsy nivonto ny tongony."
22. Moreover thou gavest them kingdoms and nations, and didst divide them into corners: so they possessed the land of Sihon, and the land of the king of Heshbon, and the land of Og king of Bashan.
22. Tu leur livras des royaumes et des peuples, dont tu partageas entre eux les contrées, et ils possédèrent le pays de Sihon, roi de Hesbon, et le pays d`Og, roi de Basan.
22. "Ary koa nanome azy fanjakana sy firenena maro Ianao, ka voazaranao araka ny fari-taniny avy ireny; ka dia nahazo ny tanin' i Sihona sy ny tanin' ny mpanjakan' i Hesbona ary ny tanin' i Oga, mpanjakan' i Basana, izy."
23. Their children also multipliedst thou as the stars of heaven, and broughtest them into the land, concerning which thou hadst promised to their fathers, that they should go in to possess it.
23. Tu multiplias leurs fils comme les étoiles des cieux, et tu les fis entrer dans le pays dont tu avais dit à leurs pères qu`ils prendraient possession.
23. Ny zanany koa dia nohamaroinao ho tahaka ny kintana eny amin' ny lanitra, sady nentinao ho amin' ny tany izay nampanantenainao ny razany, fa hidirana ka ho azony.
24. So the children went in and possessed the land, and thou subduedst before them the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, and gavest them into their hands, with their kings, and the people of the land, that they might do with them as they would.
24. "Et leurs fils entrèrent et prirent possession du pays; tu humilias devant eux les habitants du pays, les Cananéens, et tu les livras entre leurs mains, avec leurs rois et les peuples du pays, pour qu`ils les traitassent à leur gré."
24. Dia niditra ny zanany ka nahazo ny tany, ary nampietrenao teo anoloany ny Kananita tompon-tany, dia natolotrao ho eo an-tanany ireo mbamin' ny mpanjakany sy ny vahoaka tompon-tany hanaovany azy araka ny sitrapony.
25. And they took strong cities, and a fat land, and possessed houses full of all goods, wells digged, vineyards, and oliveyards, and fruit trees in abundance: so they did eat, and were filled, and became fat, and delighted themselves in thy great goodness.
25. "Ils devinrent maîtres de villes fortifiées et de terres fertiles; ils possédèrent des maisons remplies de toutes sortes de biens, des citernes creusées, des vignes, des oliviers, et des arbres fruitiers en abondance; ils mangèrent, ils se rassasièrent, ils s`engraissèrent, et ils vécurent dans les délices par ta grande bonté."
25. "Ary naka tanàna mimanda sy tany lonaka izy sy nahazo trano feno zava-tsoa rehetra sy lavaka famorian-drano voahady sy tanimboaloboka sy tanin' oliva ary hazo fihinam-boa betsaka; dia nihinana izy ka voky ary nihanatavy ka nifalifaly tamin' ny fahatsaranao lehibe."
26. Nevertheless they were disobedient, and rebelled against thee, and cast thy law behind their backs, and slew thy prophets which testified against them to turn them to thee, and they wrought great provocations.
26. Néanmoins, ils se soulevèrent et se révoltèrent contre toi. Ils jetèrent ta loi derrière leur dos, ils tuèrent tes prophètes qui les conjuraient de revenir à toi, et ils se livrèrent envers toi à de grands outrages.
26. Kanefa tsy nankatò izy ireo sady niodina taminao ary nanary ny lalànao teo ivohony, dia namono ny mpaminaninao, izay nananatra azy mafy hampiverenana azy ho aminao, ka nanao izay nampahasosotra indrindra izy ireo.
27. Therefore thou deliveredst them into the hand of their enemies, who vexed them: and in the time of their trouble, when they cried unto thee, thou heardest them from heaven; and according to thy manifold mercies thou gavest them saviours, who saved them out of the hand of their enemies.
27. "Alors tu les abandonnas entre les mains de leurs ennemis, qui les opprimèrent. Mais, au temps de leur détresse, ils crièrent à toi; et toi, tu les entendis du haut des cieux, et, dans ta grande miséricorde, tu leur donnas des libérateurs qui les sauvèrent de la main de leurs ennemis."
27. "Koa dia natolotrao ho eo an-tanan' ny fahavalony izy ka nampahory azy ireny; fa tamin' ny andro fahoriany raha nitaraina taminao izy, dia nihaino azy tany an-danitra Ianao, ary araka ny haben' ny famindramponao dia nomenao mpamonjy izy, izay namonjy azy tamin' ny tanan' ny fahavalony."
28. But after they had rest, they did evil again before thee: therefore leftest thou them in the hand of their enemies, so that they had the dominion over them: yet when they returned, and cried unto thee, thou heardest them from heaven; and many times didst thou deliver them according to thy mercies;
28. "Quand ils eurent du repos, ils recommencèrent à faire le mal devant toi. Alors tu les abandonnas entre les mains de leurs ennemis, qui les dominèrent. Mais, de nouveau, ils crièrent à toi; et toi, tu les entendis du haut des cieux, et, dans ta grande miséricorde, tu les délivras maintes fois."
28. "Kanjo rehefa niadana izy, dia nanao ratsy teo anatrehanao indray; ka dia nafoinao ho eo an-tanan' ny fahavalony izy, ka dia nanapaka azy ireny; fa raha nitaraina taminao indray izy, dia nihaino azy avy tany an-danitra Ianao, ka namonjy azy imbetsaka araka ny indrafonao."
29. And testifiedst against them, that thou mightest bring them again unto thy law: yet they dealt proudly, and hearkened not unto thy commandments, but sinned against thy judgments, (which if a man do, he shall live in them;) and withdrew the shoulder, and hardened their neck, and would not hear.
29. "Tu les conjuras de revenir à ta loi; et ils persévérèrent dans l`orgueil, ils n`écoutèrent point tes commandements, ils péchèrent contre tes ordonnances, qui font vivre celui qui les met en pratique, ils eurent une épaule rebelle, ils raidirent leur cou, et ils n`obéirent point."
29. "Ary nananatra azy mafy Ianao hampiverenanao azy ho amin' ny lalànao; kanefa mbola niavonavona ihany izy ka tsy nihaino ny didinao, fa nanota ny fitsipikao (izay mahavelona ny olona izay mankatò azy) ka nampihemotra ny sorony sy nanamafy ny hatony ary tsy nety nihaino."
30. Yet many years didst thou forbear them, and testifiedst against them by thy spirit in thy prophets: yet would they not give ear: therefore gavest thou them into the hand of the people of the lands.
30. "Tu les supportas de nombreuses années, tu leur donnas des avertissements par ton esprit, par tes prophètes; et ils ne prêtèrent point l`oreille. Alors tu les livras entre les mains des peuples étrangers."
30. "Nefa nandefitra taona maro taminy Ianao, ary ny Fanahinao, izay tao amin' ny mpaminaninao, no nentinao nananatra azy mafy; fa tsy nety nihaino ihany izy, ka dia natolotrao ho eo an-tanan' ny firenena amin' ny tany hafa."
31. Nevertheless for thy great mercies' sake thou didst not utterly consume them, nor forsake them; for thou art a gracious and merciful God.
31. Mais, dans ta grande miséricorde, tu ne les anéantis pas, et tu ne les abandonnas pas, car tu es un Dieu compatissant et miséricordieux.
31. Nefa noho ny haben' ny famindramponao dia tsy navelanao ho lany ringana tanteraka izy ary tsy nafoinao, satria Andriamanitra mamindra fo sy miantra Ianao.
32. Now therefore, our God, the great, the mighty, and the terrible God, who keepest covenant and mercy, let not all the trouble seem little before thee, that hath come upon us, on our kings, on our princes, and on our priests, and on our prophets, and on our fathers, and on all thy people, since the time of the kings of Assyria unto this day.
32. Et maintenant, ô notre Dieu, Dieu grand, puissant et redoutable, toi qui gardes ton alliance et qui exerces la miséricorde, ne regarde pas comme peu de chose toutes les souffrances que nous avons éprouvées, nous, nos rois, nos chefs, nos sacrificateurs, nos prophètes, nos pères et tout ton peuple, depuis le temps des rois d`Assyrie jusqu`à ce jour.
32. Koa ankehitriny, ry Andriamanitray ô, Andriamanitra lehibe sady mahery no mahatahotra, izay mitandrina fanekena sy famindrampo, aoka tsy ho kely eo imasonao ny fahoriana rehetra izay nanjo anay, dia ny mpanjakanay sy ny mpanapaka anay sy ny mpisoronay sy ny mpaminaninay ary ny razanay, dia ny olonao rehetra hatramin' ny andron' ireo mpanjakan' i Asyria ka mandraka androany.
33. Howbeit thou art just in all that is brought upon us; for thou hast done right, but we have done wickedly:
33. Tu as été juste dans tout ce qui nous est arrivé, car tu t`es montré fidèle, et nous avons fait le mal.
33. "Ianao no marina tamin' izay rehetra nanjo anay, fa marina ny nataonao; fa izahay no nanao ratsy;"
34. Neither have our kings, our princes, our priests, nor our fathers, kept thy law, nor hearkened unto thy commandments and thy testimonies, wherewith thou didst testify against them.
34. Nos rois, nos chefs, nos sacrificateurs et nos pères n`ont point observé ta loi, et ils n`ont été attentifs ni à tes commandements ni aux avertissements que tu leur adressais.
34. Ary ny mpanjakanay sy ny mpanapaka anay sy ny mpisoronay ary ny razanay dia samy tsy nitandrina ny lalànao, na nihaino ny didinao sy ny teni-vavolombelonao, izay nananaranao azy mafy.
35. For they have not served thee in their kingdom, and in thy great goodness that thou gavest them, and in the large and fat land which thou gavest before them, neither turned they from their wicked works.
35. Pendant qu`ils étaient les maîtres, au milieu des bienfaits nombreux que tu leur accordais, dans le pays vaste et fertile que tu leur avais livré, ils ne t`ont point servi et ils ne se sont point détournés de leurs oeuvres mauvaises.
35. Fa tsy nanompo Anao teo amin' ny fanjakany izy sy teo amin' ny haben' ny zava-tsoa nomenao azy ary teo amin' ny tany malalaka sy lonaka izay nomenao ho eo anoloany sady tsy niala tamin' ny asa ratsiny izy.
36. Behold, we are servants this day, and for the land that thou gavest unto our fathers to eat the fruit thereof and the good thereof, behold, we are servants in it:
36. Et aujourd`hui, nous voici esclaves! Nous voici esclaves sur la terre que tu as donnée à nos pères, pour qu`ils jouissent de ses fruits et de ses biens!
36. "Koa, indreto, mpanompo izahay izao, ary ny amin' ny tany izay nomenao ny razanay hihinanany ny vokatra sy ny soa avy aminy, indreto, mpanompo eto izahay;"
37. And it yieldeth much increase unto the kings whom thou hast set over us because of our sins: also they have dominion over our bodies, and over our cattle, at their pleasure, and we are in great distress.
37. "Elle multiplie ses produits pour les rois auxquels tu nous as assujettis, à cause de nos péchés; ils dominent à leur gré sur nos corps et sur notre bétail, et nous sommes dans une grande angoisse!"
37. "Ary mahavokatra be izy, kanefa ho an' ireo mpanjaka izay notendrenao hanapaka anay noho ny fahotanay ihany izany; eny, manapaka ny tenanay sy ny biby fiompinay araka ny sitrapony izy, ka ozoim-pahoriana mafy izahay."
The Agreement of the People
38. And because of all this we make a sure covenant, and write it; and our princes, Levites, and priests, seal unto it.
38. "Pour tout cela, nous contractâmes une alliance, que nous mîmes par écrit; et nos chefs, nos Lévites et nos sacrificateurs y apposèrent leur sceau."
