Chapter 1
1. The words of Nehemiah the son of Hachaliah. And it came to pass in the month Chisleu, in the twentieth year, as I was in Shushan the palace,

2. That Hanani, one of my brethren, came, he and certain men of Judah; and I asked them concerning the Jews that had escaped, which were left of the captivity, and concerning Jerusalem.
2. Hanani, l`un de mes frères, et quelques hommes arrivèrent de Juda. Je les questionnai au sujet des Juifs réchappés qui étaient restés de la captivité, et au sujet de Jérusalem.

3. And they said unto me, The remnant that are left of the captivity there in the province are in great affliction and reproach: the wall of Jerusalem also is broken down, and the gates thereof are burned with fire.
3. "Ils me répondirent: Ceux qui sont restés de la captivité sont là dans la province, au comble du malheur et de l`opprobre; les murailles de Jérusalem sont en ruines, et ses portes sont consumées par le feu."

4. And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned certain days, and fasted, and prayed before the God of heaven,
4. Lorsque j`entendis ces choses, je m`assis, je pleurai, et je fus plusieurs jours dans la désolation. Je jeûnai et je priai devant le Dieu des cieux,

5. And said, I beseech thee, O LORD God of heaven, the great and terrible God, that keepeth covenant and mercy for them that love him and observe his commandments:

Let thine ear now be attentive, and thine eyes open, that thou mayest hear the prayer of thy servant, which I pray before thee now, day and night, for the children of Israel thy servants, and confess the sins of the children of Israel, which we have sinned against thee: both I and my father's house have sinned.
6. "Que ton oreille soit attentive et que tes yeux soient ouverts: écoute la prière que ton serviteur t`adresse en ce moment, jour et nuit, pour tes serviteurs les enfants d`Israël, en confessant les péchés des enfants d`Israël, nos péchés contre toi; car moi et la maison de mon père, nous avons péché."
6. "Aoka hihaino ny sofinao ary hihiratra ny masonao, mba hohenoinao ny vavaky ny mpanomponao, izay ataoko eto anatrehanao ankehitriny, andro aman' alina ho an' ny Zanak' Isiraely mpanomponao sy izay anekeko ny fahotan' ny Zanak' Isiraely, izay efa nanotanay taminao; fa izaho sy ny mpianakavin' ny raiko dia samy efa nanota avokoa."
7. We have dealt very corruptly against thee, and have not kept the commandments, nor the statutes, nor the judgments, which thou commandedst thy servant Moses.
7. Nous t`avons offensé, et nous n`avons point observé les commandements, les lois et les ordonnances que tu prescrivis à Moïse, ton serviteur.

8. Remember, I beseech thee, the word that thou commandedst thy servant Moses, saying, If ye transgress, I will scatter you abroad among the nations:
8. "Souviens-toi de cette parole que tu donnas ordre à Moïse, ton serviteur, de prononcer. Lorsque vous pécherez, je vous disperserai parmi les peuples;"

9. But if ye turn unto me, and keep my commandments, and do them; though there were of you cast out unto the uttermost part of the heaven, yet will I gather them from thence, and will bring them unto the place that I have chosen to set my name there.

10. Now these are thy servants and thy people, whom thou hast redeemed by thy great power, and by thy strong hand.
10. Ils sont tes serviteurs et ton peuple, que tu as rachetés par ta grande puissance et par ta main forte.

11. O LORD, I beseech thee, let now thine ear be attentive to the prayer of thy servant, and to the prayer of thy servants, who desire to fear thy name: and prosper, I pray thee, thy servant this day, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man. For I was the king's cupbearer.
11. Ah! Seigneur, que ton oreille soit attentive à la prière de ton serviteur, et à la prière de tes serviteurs qui veulent craindre ton nom! Donne aujourd`hui du succès à ton serviteur, et fais-lui trouver grâce devant cet homme! J`étais alors échanson du roi.
11. "Jehovah ô, mifona aminao aho, aoka ny sofinao hihaino ny fivavaky ny mpanomponao sy ny fivavak' ireo mpanomponao izay faly amin' ny fahatahorana ny anaranao; ary mifona aminao aho, ambino ny mpanomponao anio, ary aoka hahazo famindrampo eo imason' io lehilahy io aho. Chapter 2
1. And it came to pass in the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that wine was before him: and I took up the wine, and gave it unto the king. Now I had not been beforetime sad in his presence.
1. Au mois de Nisan, la vingtième année du roi Artaxerxès, comme le vin était devant lui, je pris le vin et je l`offris au roi. Jamais je n`avais paru triste en sa présence.

2. Wherefore the king said unto me, Why is thy countenance sad, seeing thou art not sick? this is nothing else but sorrow of heart. Then I was very sore afraid,
2. "Le roi me dit: Pourquoi as-tu mauvais visage? Tu n`es pourtant pas malade; ce ne peut être qu`un chagrin de coeur. Je fus saisi d`une grande crainte,"

3. And said unto the king, Let the king live for ever: why should not my countenance be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers' sepulchres, lieth waste, and the gates thereof are consumed with fire?
3. et je répondis au roi: Que le roi vive éternellement! Comment n`aurais-je pas mauvais visage, lorsque la ville où sont les sépulcres de mes pères est détruite et que ses portes sont consumées par le feu?

4. Then the king said unto me, For what dost thou make request? So I prayed to the God of heaven.
4. Et le roi me dit: Que demandes-tu? Je priai le Dieu des cieux,
4. Dia hoy ny mpanjaka tamiko: Inona àry no angatahinao? Dia nivavaka tamin' Andriamanitry ny lanitra aho.
5. And I said unto the king, If it please the king, and if thy servant have found favour in thy sight, that thou wouldest send me unto Judah, unto the city of my fathers' sepulchres, that I may build it.
5. et je répondis au roi: Si le roi le trouve bon, et si ton serviteur lui est agréable, envoie-moi en Juda, vers la ville des sépulcres de mes pères, pour que je la rebâtisse.
5. Ary niteny tamin' ny mpanjaka aho hoe: Raha sitraky ny mpanjaka, ka mahita fitia eo imasonao ny mpanomponao, dia mba alefaso ho any Joda aho, ho any amin' ny tanàna misy ny fasan-drazako, mba hamboarako izany.
6. And the king said unto me, (the queen also sitting by him,) For how long shall thy journey be? and when wilt thou return? So it pleased the king to send me; and I set him a time.
6. Le roi, auprès duquel la reine était assise, me dit alors: Combien ton voyage durera-t-il, et quand seras-tu de retour? Il plut au roi de me laisser partir, et je lui fixai un temps.
6. Ary hoy ny mpanjaka tamiko (ny vadin' ny mpanjaka koa nipetraka teo anilany): Fa haharitra hafiriana anefa ny dianao? Ary rahoviana ianao no hiverina? Ka dia sitraky ny mpanjaka ny handefa ahy, ary dia nilaza fotoana taminy aho.
7. Moreover I said unto the king, If it please the king, let letters be given me to the governors beyond the river, that they may convey me over till I come into Judah;
7. Puis je dis au roi: Si le roi le trouve bon, qu`on me donne des lettres pour les gouverneurs de l`autre côté du fleuve, afin qu`ils me laissent passer et entrer en Juda,
7. Ary hoy koa aho tamin' ny mpanjaka: Raha sitraky ny mpanjaka, aoka homena taratasy ho amin' ireo governora any an-dafin' ny ony aho, mba hamelany ahy handeha hatrany Joda,
8. And a letter unto Asaph the keeper of the king's forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the palace which appertained to the house, and for the wall of the city, and for the house that I shall enter into. And the king granted me, according to the good hand of my God upon me.
8. et une lettre pour Asaph, garde forestier du roi, afin qu`il me fournisse du bois de charpente pour les portes de la citadelle près de la maison, pour la muraille de la ville, et pour la maison que j`occuperai. Le roi me donna ces lettres, car la bonne main de mon Dieu était sur moi.
8. Sy taratasy ho amin' i Asafa, mpitandrina ny alan' ny mpanjaka mba hanomezany hazo hanaovako ny vavahadin' ny lapa izay momba ny tempoly sy hanaovako ny mandan' ny tanàna sy ny trano izay hitoerako. Dia nomen' ny mpanjaka ahy izany araka ny soa nataon' ny tanan' Andriamanitro tamiko.
9. Then I came to the governors beyond the river, and gave them the king's letters. Now the king had sent captains of the army and horsemen with me.
9. Je me rendis auprès des gouverneurs de l`autre côté du fleuve, et je leur remis les lettres du roi, qui m`avait fait accompagner par des chefs de l`armée et par des cavaliers.
9. Dia tonga tany amin' ireo governora any an-dafin' ny ony aho, ka natolotro azy ny taratasin' ny mpanjaka. ary ny mpanjaka efa naniraka manamboninahitra sy mpitaingin-tsoavaly hanatitra ahy.
10. When Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, heard of it, it grieved them exceedingly that there was come a man to seek the welfare of the children of Israel.
10. Sanballat, le Horonite, et Tobija, le serviteur ammonite, l`ayant appris, eurent un grand déplaisir de ce qu`il venait un homme pour chercher le bien des enfants d`Israël.
10. Raha ren' i Sanbala Horonita sy Tobia Amonita mpanompo ny amin' izany dia nahasosotra azy ireo indrindra izany satria nisy lehilahy tonga hitady izay hahasoa ny Zanak' Isiraely.
11. So I came to Jerusalem, and was there three days.
11. J`arrivai à Jérusalem, et j`y passai trois jours.
11. Dia tonga tany Jerosalema aho ka nitoetra tany hateloana.
12. And I arose in the night, I and some few men with me; neither told I any man what my God had put in my heart to do at Jerusalem: neither was there any beast with me, save the beast that I rode upon.
12. Après quoi, je me levai pendant la nuit avec quelques hommes, sans avoir dit à personne ce que mon Dieu m`avait mis au coeur de faire pour Jérusalem. Il n`y avait avec moi d`autre bête de somme que ma propre monture.
12. "Ary nifoha tamin' ny alina aho, dia izaho sy ny olom-bitsy nomba ahy; nefa tsy nisy olona nilazako izay natsindrin' Andriamanitra ny foko hatao any Jerosalema; ary tsy nisy biby nentiko afa-tsy ilay nitaingenako ihany."
13. And I went out by night by the gate of the valley, even before the dragon well, and to the dung port, and viewed the walls of Jerusalem, which were broken down, and the gates thereof were consumed with fire.
13. Je sortis de nuit par la porte de la vallée, et je me dirigeai contre la source du dragon et vers la porte du fumier, considérant les murailles en ruines de Jérusalem et réfléchissant à ses portes consumées par le feu.
13. Dia nandeha alina aho ka nivoaka tamin' ny vavahady mankany amin' ny lohasaha, tandrifin' ny loharanon' ny dragona, sy tamin' ny vavahadin-jezika ka nizaha ny mandan' i Jerosalema izay efa rava sy ny vavahadiny izay levon' ny afo.
14. Then I went on to the gate of the fountain, and to the king's pool: but there was no place for the beast that was under me to pass.
14. Je passai près de la porte de la source et de l`étang du roi, et il n`y avait point de place par où pût passer la bête qui était sous moi.
14. "Dia nankany amin' ny vavahadin-doharano sy ny farihin' ny mpanjaka koa aho; nefa tsy nisy lalana azon' ilay biby nitaingenako naleha akory."
15. Then went I up in the night by the brook, and viewed the wall, and turned back, and entered by the gate of the valley, and so returned.
15. Je montai de nuit par le torrent, et je considérai encore la muraille. Puis je rentrai par la porte de la vallée, et je fus ainsi de retour.
15. Dia niakatra teo amin' ny sakeli-drano aho tamin' ny alina ka nizaha ny manda, dia nitodika ka niditra tamin' ny vavahady mankany amin' ny lohasaha, dia niverina.
16. And the rulers knew not whither I went, or what I did; neither had I as yet told it to the Jews, nor to the priests, nor to the nobles, nor to the rulers, nor to the rest that did the work.
16. Les magistrats ignoraient où j`étais allé, et ce que je faisais. Jusqu`à ce moment, je n`avais rien dit aux Juifs, ni aux sacrificateurs, ni aux grands, ni aux magistrats, ni à aucun de ceux qui s`occupaient des affaires.
16. "Nefa ireo mpanapaka tsy nahalala izay nalehako, na izay nataoko; fa hatramin' izay dia tsy mbola nolazaiko tamin' ny Jiosy izany, na tamin' ny mpisorona, na tamin' ny manankaja, na tamin' ny mpanapaka, na tamin' ny vahoaka sisa izay nanao ny asa."
17. Then said I unto them, Ye see the distress that we are in, how Jerusalem lieth waste, and the gates thereof are burned with fire: come, and let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we be no more a reproach.
17. Je leur dis alors: Vous voyez le malheureux état où nous sommes! Jérusalem est détruite, et ses portes sont consumées par le feu! Venez, rebâtissons la muraille de Jérusalem, et nous ne serons plus dans l`opprobre.
17. "Ary hoy aho tamin' izy ireo: Ianareo mahita ny fahoriantsika, fa rava Jerosalema ary nodoran' ny afo ny vavahadiny; koa andeha isika hanangana ny mandan' i Jerosalema mba tsy ho latsa intsony isika."
18. Then I told them of the hand of my God which was good upon me; as also the king's words that he had spoken unto me. And they said, Let us rise up and build. So they strengthened their hands for this good work.
18. Et je leur racontai comment la bonne main de mon Dieu avait été sur moi, et quelles paroles le roi m`avait adressées. Ils dirent: Levons-nous, et bâtissons! Et ils se fortifièrent dans cette bonne résolution.
18. Dia nambarako azy ny tanan' Andriamanitra izay tsara tamiko, mbamin' ny tenin' ny mpanjaka koa, izay nolazainy tamiko. Ary hoy izy ireo: Avia, aoka isika hitsangana ka hanorina. Koa dia nampahery ny tanany hanao izany asa tsara izany izy.
19. But when Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arabian, heard it, they laughed us to scorn, and despised us, and said, What is this thing that ye do? will ye rebel against the king?
19. Sanballat, le Horonite, Tobija, le serviteur ammonite, et Guéschem, l`Arabe, en ayant été informés, se moquèrent de nous et nous méprisèrent. Ils dirent: Que faites-vous là? Vous révoltez-vous contre le roi?
19. Fa nony ren' i Sanbala Horonita sy Tobia Amonita mpanompo ary Gasema Arabo izany, dia nihomehy nanaraby anay izy, sady nanevateva anay ka nanao hoe: Inona izao zavatra ataonareo izao? Hikomy amin' ny mpanjaka angaha ianareo?
20. Then answered I them, and said unto them, The God of heaven, he will prosper us; therefore we his servants will arise and build: but ye have no portion, nor right, nor memorial, in Jerusalem.
20. "Et je leur fis cette réponse: Le Dieu des cieux nous donnera le succès. Nous, ses serviteurs, nous nous lèverons et nous bâtirons; mais vous, vous n`avez ni part, ni droit, ni souvenir dans Jérusalem."
20. "Dia namaly azy aho ka nanao taminy hoe: Andriamanitry ny lanitra, Izy no hanambina anay, ka dia hitsangana handrafitra izahay mpanompony; fa tsy manana anjara, na rariny, na fahatsiarovana aty Jerosalema ianareo."
Chapter 3
1. Then Eliashib the high priest rose up with his brethren the priests, and they builded the sheep gate; they sanctified it, and set up the doors of it; even unto the tower of Meah they sanctified it, unto the tower of Hananeel.
1. "Éliaschib, le souverain sacrificateur, se leva avec ses frères, les sacrificateurs, et ils bâtirent la porte des brebis. Ils la consacrèrent et en posèrent les battants; ils la consacrèrent, depuis la tour de Méa jusqu`à la tour de Hananeel."
1. "Dia nitsangana Eliasiba mpisoronabe sy ny mpisorona rahalahiny ka nandrafitra ny vavahadin' ondry; dia nanamasina azy izy ka nandatsaka ny lela-vavahadiny; hatramin' ny tilikambo Hamea ka hatramin' ny tilikambo Hananela no nohamasininy."
2. And next unto him builded the men of Jericho. And next to them builded Zaccur the son of Imri.
2. "A côté d`Éliaschib bâtirent les hommes de Jéricho; à côté de lui bâtit aussi Zaccur, fils d`Imri."

3. But the fish gate did the sons of Hassenaah build, who also laid the beams thereof, and set up the doors thereof, the locks thereof, and the bars thereof.
3. Les fils de Senaa bâtirent la porte des poissons. Ils la couvrirent, et en posèrent les battants, les verrous et les barres.

4. And next unto them repaired Meremoth the son of Urijah, the son of Koz. And next unto them repaired Meshullam the son of Berechiah, the son of Meshezabeel. And next unto them repaired Zadok the son of Baana.
4. "A côté d`eux travailla aux réparations Merémoth, fils d`Urie, fils d`Hakkots; à côté d`eux travailla Meschullam, fils de Bérékia, fils de Meschézabeel; à côté d`eux travailla Tsadok, fils de Baana;"
4. Ary manarakaraka ireo dia namboatra koa Meremota, zanak' i Oria, zanak' i Hakoza. Ary manarakaraka ireo dia namboatra koa Mesolama, zanak' i Berekia, zanak' i Mesezabela. Ary manarakaraka io dia namboatra koa Zadoka, zanak' i Bana.
5. And next unto them the Tekoites repaired; but their nobles put not their necks to the work of their LORD.

6. Moreover the old gate repaired Jehoiada the son of Paseah, and Meshullam the son of Besodeiah; they laid the beams thereof, and set up the doors thereof, and the locks thereof, and the bars thereof.
6. Jojada, fils de Paséach, et Meschullam, fils de Besodia, réparèrent la vieille porte. Ils la couvrirent, et en posèrent les battants, les verrous et les barres.
6. "Ary ny vavahady taloha dia namboarin' i Joiada, zanak' i Pasea sy Mesolama, zanak' i Besodia; izy roa lahy no nandatsaka ny rairainy sy ny lela-vavahadiny mbamin' ny hidiny sy ny vavombiny."
7. And next unto them repaired Melatiah the Gibeonite, and Jadon the Meronothite, the men of Gibeon, and of Mizpah, unto the throne of the governor on this side the river.
7. "A côté d`eux travaillèrent Melatia, le Gabaonite, Jadon, le Méronothite, et les hommes de Gabaon et de Mitspa, ressortissant au siège du gouverneur de ce côté du fleuve;"
7. Ary manarakaraka ireo dia namboatra koa Melatia Gibeonita sy Jadona Meronotita mbamin' ny mponina tany Gibeona sy Mizpa, hatramin' ny sezafiandrianan' ny governora ety an-dafin' ny ony ety.
8. Next unto him repaired Uzziel the son of Harhaiah, of the goldsmiths. Next unto him also repaired Hananiah the son of one of the apothecaries, and they fortified Jerusalem unto the broad wall.
8. à côté d`eux travailla Uzziel, fils de Harhaja, d`entre les orfèvres, et à côté de lui travailla Hanania, d`entre les parfumeurs. Ils laissèrent Jérusalem jusqu`à la muraille large.

9. And next unto them repaired Rephaiah the son of Hur, the ruler of the half part of Jerusalem.
9. A côté d`eux travailla aux réparations Rephaja, fils de Hur, chef de la moitié du district de Jérusalem.

10. And next unto them repaired Jedaiah the son of Harumaph, even over against his house. And next unto him repaired Hattush the son of Hashabniah.
10. A côté d`eux travailla vis-à-vis de sa maison Jedaja, fils de Harumaph, et à côté de lui travailla Hattusch, fils de Haschabnia.
10. Ary manarakaraka ireo dia namboatra koa Jedaia, zanak' i Haromafa, dia ny teo amin' ny tandrifin' ny tranony ihany. Ary manarakaraka ireo dia namboatra koa hatosy, zanak' i Hasabnia.
