Joseph's Brothers Go to Egypt
1. Now when Jacob saw that there was corn in Egypt, Jacob said unto his sons, Why do ye look one upon another?
1. Jacob, voyant qu`il y avait du blé en Égypte, dit à ses fils: Pourquoi vous regardez-vous les uns les autres?
1. Ary rehefa hitan' i Jakoba fa nisy varimbazaha tany Egypta, dia hoy izy tamin' ny zanany lahy: Nahoana no mifampijery foana ianareo?
2. And he said, Behold, I have heard that there is corn in Egypt: get you down thither, and buy for us from thence; that we may live, and not die.
2. "Il dit: Voici, j`apprends qu`il y a du blé en Égypte; descendez-y, pour nous en acheter là, afin que nous vivions et que nous ne mourions pas."
2. "Dia hoy izy: Indro, efa reko fa misy varimbazaha any Egypta; Andeha midina any ianareo, ka mividiana ho antsika; mba ho velona isika fa tsy ho faty."
3. And Joseph's ten brethren went down to buy corn in Egypt.
3. Dix frères de Joseph descendirent en Égypte, pour acheter du blé.
3. Dia lasa nidina izy folo lahy rahalahin' i Josefa mba hividy varimbazaha tany Egypta.
4. But Benjamin, Joseph's brother, Jacob sent not with his brethren; for he said, Lest peradventure mischief befall him.
4. Jacob n`envoya point avec eux Benjamin, frère de Joseph, dans la crainte qu`il ne lui arrivât quelque malheur.
4. Fa Benjamina rahalahin' i Josefa tsy mba nalefan' i Jakoba niaraka tamin' ny rahalahiny, fa hoy izy: Andrao hisy loza hanjo azy.
5. And the sons of Israel came to buy corn among those that came: for the famine was in the land of Canaan.
5. "Les fils d`Israël vinrent pour acheter du blé, au milieu de ceux qui venaient aussi; car la famine était dans le pays de Canaan."
5. "Dia tonga ny zanak' Isiraely mba hividy varimbazaha niaraka tamin' ireo izay nankany; fa tratry ny mosary ny tany Kanana."
6. And Joseph was the governor over the land, and he it was that sold to all the people of the land: and Joseph's brethren came, and bowed down themselves before him with their faces to the earth.
6. "Joseph commandait dans le pays; c`est lui qui vendait du blé à tout le peuple du pays. Les frères de Joseph vinrent, et se prosternèrent devant lui la face contre terre."
6. "Ary Josefa no mpanapaka ny tany, sady izy no nivarotra tamin'ny tompon-tany rehetra; ary tonga ny rahalahin' i Josefa ka niankohoka tamin' ny tany teo anatrehany."
7. And Joseph saw his brethren, and he knew them, but made himself strange unto them, and spake roughly unto them; and he said unto them, Whence come ye? And they said, From the land of Canaan to buy food.
7. "Joseph vit ses frères et les reconnut; mais il feignit d`être un étranger pour eux, il leur parla durement, et leur dit: D`où venez-vous? Ils répondirent: Du pays de Canaan, pour acheter des vivres."

8. And Joseph knew his brethren, but they knew not him.
8. Joseph reconnut ses frères, mais eux ne le reconnurent pas.
8. Ary fantatr'i Josefa ny rahalahiny, nefa izy ireo kosa tsy mba nahafantatra azy.
9. And Joseph remembered the dreams which he dreamed of them, and said unto them, Ye are spies; to see the nakedness of the land ye are come.
9. "Joseph se souvint des songes qu`il avait eus à leur sujet, et il leur dit: Vous êtes des espions; c`est pour observer les lieux faibles du pays que vous êtes venus."
9. "Ary nahatsiaro ireo nofy izay nanofisany azy Josefa ka nanao taminy hoe: Mpisafo ianareo; hizaha ny fangadihadin' ny tany no nahatongavanareo."
10. And they said unto him, Nay, my lord, but to buy food are thy servants come.
10. Ils lui répondirent: Non, mon seigneur, tes serviteurs sont venus pour acheter du blé.
10. "Fa hoy izy ireo taminy: Tsia, tompokolahy; fa tonga mba hividy hanina ny mpanomponao."
11. We are all one man's sons; we are true men, thy servants are no spies.
11. "Nous sommes tous fils d`un même homme; nous sommes sincères, tes serviteurs ne sont pas des espions."
11. "Zanaky ny lehilahy iray izahay rehetra; lehilahy marina izahay, tsy mba mpisafo akory ny mpanomponao."
12. And he said unto them, Nay, but to see the nakedness of the land ye are come.
12. "Il leur dit: Nullement; c`est pour observer les lieux faibles du pays que vous êtes venus."
12. Ary hoy izy taminy: Tsia, fa hizaha ny fangadihadin' ny tany no nahatongavanareo.
13. And they said, Thy servants are twelve brethren, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan; and, behold, the youngest is this day with our father, and one is not.
13. "Ils répondirent: Nous, tes serviteurs, sommes douze frères, fils d`un même homme au pays de Canaan; et voici, le plus jeune est aujourd`hui avec notre père, et il y en a un qui n`est plus."
13. "Fa hoy ireo: Roa ambin' ny folo mirahalahy ny mpanomponao, zanaky ny lehilahy iray ihany any amin' ny tany Kanana; ary, indro, ny faralahy dia any amin' ny rainay ankehitriny, fa ny anankiray tsy ao intsony."
14. And Joseph said unto them, That is it that I spake unto you, saying, Ye are spies:
14. Joseph leur dit: Je viens de vous le dire, vous êtes des espions.
14. "Ary hoy Josefa taminy: Izay nolazaiko taminareo izay ihany no izy, hoe: Mpisafo ianareo;"
15. Hereby ye shall be proved: By the life of Pharaoh ye shall not go forth hence, except your youngest brother come hither.
15. Voici comment vous serez éprouvés. Par la vie de Pharaon! vous ne sortirez point d`ici que votre jeune frère ne soit venu.

16. Send one of you, and let him fetch your brother, and ye shall be kept in prison, that your words may be proved, whether there be any truth in you: or else by the life of Pharaoh surely ye are spies.
16. "Envoyez l`un de vous pour chercher votre frère; et vous, restez prisonniers. Vos paroles seront éprouvées, et je saurai si la vérité est chez vous; sinon, par la vie de Pharaon! vous êtes des espions."
16. "Iraho ny anankiray aminareo, ary aoka izy haka ny rahalahinareo, fa ianareo hotazonina ao an-tranomaizina, mba hoporofoina ny teninareo na misy fahamarinana ao aminareo na tsia; raha tsy izany raha velona koa Farao dia mpisafo tokoa ianareo."
17. And he put them all together into ward three days.
17. Et il les mit ensemble trois jours en prison.
17. Dia niara-nataony tao an-tranomaizina hateloana izy rehetra.
18. And Joseph said unto them the third day, This do, and live; for I fear God:
18. Le troisième jour, Joseph leur dit: Faites ceci, et vous vivrez. Je crains Dieu!
18. Ary hoy Josefa tamin' izy ireo tamin' ny andro fahatelo: Izao no ataovy, dia ho velona ianareo, fa matahotra an' Andriamanitra aho.
19. If ye be true men, let one of your brethren be bound in the house of your prison: go ye, carry corn for the famine of your houses:
19. "Si vous êtes sincères, que l`un de vos frères reste enfermé dans votre prison; et vous, partez, emportez du blé pour nourrir vos familles,"
19. "Raha olo-marina àry ianareo, dia aoka ny anankiray amin' ny rahalahinareo hafatotra ao amin' ny trano izay atao tranomaizina ho anareo; ary mandehana ianareo, mitondrà varimbazaha noho ny mosary any amin' ny tranonareo;"
20. But bring your youngest brother unto me; so shall your words be verified, and ye shall not die. And they did so.
20. et amenez-moi votre jeune frère, afin que vos paroles soient éprouvées et que vous ne mouriez point. Et ils firent ainsi.
20. "Ary ny zandrinareo faralahy dia ento mankaty amiko; dia ho voamarina ny teninareo, ary tsy ho faty ianareo. Ary nataony izany."
21. And they said one to another, We are verily guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the anguish of his soul, when he besought us, and we would not hear; therefore is this distress come upon us.
21. Ils se dirent alors l`un à l`autre: Oui, nous avons été coupables envers notre frère, car nous avons vu l`angoisse de son âme, quand il nous demandait grâce, et nous ne l`avons point écouté! C`est pour cela que cette affliction nous arrive.
21. "Dia niresaka izy ireo hoe: Efa meloka tokoa isika noho ny amin' ny rahalahintsika, satria nahita ny fahorian' ny fanahiny isika, raha nitaraina tamintsika izy, nefa tsy mba nihaino isika; noho izany no nahatongavan' izao fahoriana izao amintsika."
22. And Reuben answered them, saying, Spake I not unto you, saying, Do not sin against the child; and ye would not hear? therefore, behold, also his blood is required.
22. Ruben, prenant la parole, leur dit: Ne vous disais-je pas: Ne commettez point un crime envers cet enfant? Mais vous n`avez point écouté. Et voici, son sang est redemandé.
22. "Dia namaly azy ireo Robena ka nanao hoe: Moa tsy niteny taminareo va aho ka nanao hoe: Aza manota amin' ny zaza; nefa tsy mba nihaino ianareo; noho izany, indro, fa adinina koa ny rany."
23. And they knew not that Joseph understood them; for he spake unto them by an interpreter.
23. Ils ne savaient pas que Joseph comprenait, car il se servait avec eux d`un interprète.
23. Ary izy ireo tsy mba nahalala fa Josefa nahafantatra ny teniny, satria niteny tamin' izy ireo tamin' ny alalan' ny mpandika teny Josefa.
24. And he turned himself about from them, and wept; and returned to them again, and communed with them, and took from them Simeon, and bound him before their eyes.
24. "Il s`éloigna d`eux, pour pleurer. Il revint, et leur parla; puis il prit parmi eux Siméon, et le fit enchaîner sous leurs yeux."
24. "Ary Josefa dia nihodina niala teo amin' izy ireo ka nitomany; ary niverina nankeo aminy indray izy ka niteny taminy, ary dia naka an' i Simeona teo aminy sady namatotra azy teo imasony."
25. Then Joseph commanded to fill their sacks with corn, and to restore every man's money into his sack, and to give them provision for the way: and thus did he unto them.
25. Joseph ordonna qu`on remplît de blé leurs sacs, qu`on remît l`argent de chacun dans son sac, et qu`on leur donnât des provisions pour la route. Et l`on fit ainsi.
25. "Ary Josefa nanome teny hameno varimbazaha ny lasakany sady hamerina ny volan' ny isan-dahy ho ao anatin' ny lasakany avy ary hanome vatsy azy hoentiny eny an-dalana; dia izany no nataony taminy."
26. And they laded their asses with the corn, and departed thence.
26. Ils chargèrent le blé sur leurs ânes, et partirent.
26. Ary natainginy tamin' ny boriky ny varimbazaha, dia lasa nandeha izy ireo.
27. And as one of them opened his sack to give his ass provender in the inn, he espied his money; for, behold, it was in his sack's mouth.
27. L`un d`eux ouvrit son sac pour donner du fourrage à son âne, dans le lieu où ils passèrent la nuit, et il vit l`argent qui était à l`entrée du sac.
27. "Ary raha nosokafan' ny anankiray tamin' izy ireo ny lasakany hampihinanany ny borikiny teo amin' izay nandriany, dia hitany ny volany; fa, indro, teo am-bavan' ny lasakany izany."
28. And he said unto his brethren, My money is restored; and, lo, it is even in my sack: and their heart failed them, and they were afraid, saying one to another, What is this that God hath done unto us?
28. "Il dit à ses frères: Mon argent a été rendu, et le voici dans mon sac. Alors leur coeur fut en défaillance; et ils se dirent l`un à l`autre, en tremblant: Qu`est-ce que Dieu nous a fait?"
28. "Dia hoy izy tamin' ireo rahalahiny: Naverina ny volako, ka, indro, eo anatin' ny lasakako izany; dia ketraka ny fon' izy ireo, ary nifampijery tamin-tahotra izy ka niresaka hoe: Inona izao ataon' Andriamanitra amintsika izao?"
29. And they came unto Jacob their father unto the land of Canaan, and told him all that befell unto them; saying,
29. Ils revinrent auprès de Jacob, leur père, dans le pays de Canaan, et ils lui racontèrent tout ce qui leur était arrivé. Ils dirent:
29. Ary tonga tany amin' i Jakoba rainy tany amin' ny tany Kanana izy, dia nambarany taminy izay rehetra efa nanjo azy, ka hoy izy:
30. The man, who is the lord of the land, spake roughly to us, and took us for spies of the country.
30. L`homme, qui est le seigneur du pays, nous a parlé durement, et il nous a pris pour des espions.
30. Mafy ny teny nataon-dralehilahy, tompon' ny tany taminay, fa nataony ho mpisafo ny tany izahay.
31. And we said unto him, We are true men; we are no spies:
31. Nous lui avons dit: Nous sommes sincères, nous ne sommes pas des espions.
31. "Ary hoy izahay taminy: Olo-marina izahay, fa tsy mba mpisafo tsy akory;"
32. We be twelve brethren, sons of our father; one is not, and the youngest is this day with our father in the land of Canaan.
32. "Nous sommes douze frères, fils de notre père; l`un n`est plus, et le plus jeune est aujourd`hui avec notre père au pays de Canaan."
32. "Roa ambin' ny folo mirahalahy izahay no zanaky ny rainay; tsy ao intsony ny anankiray, ary ny faralahy dia any amin' ny rainay any amin' ny tany Kanana ankehitriny."
33. And the man, the lord of the country, said unto us, Hereby shall I know that ye are true men; leave one of your brethren here with me, and take food for the famine of your households, and be gone:
33. Et l`homme, qui est le seigneur du pays, nous a dit: Voici comment je saurai si vous êtes sincères. Laissez auprès de moi l`un de vos frères, prenez de quoi nourrir vos familles, partez, et amenez-moi votre jeune frère.
33. "Dia hoy ralehilahy, tompon' ny tany taminay: Izao àry no hahafantarako fa olo-marina ianareo, ny anankiray aminareo mirahalahy avy dia avelao aty amiko, ka mitondrà sakafo noho ny mosary any amin' ny taninareo, dia mandehana;"
34. And bring your youngest brother unto me: then shall I know that ye are no spies, but that ye are true men: so will I deliver you your brother, and ye shall traffick in the land.
34. "Je saurai ainsi que vous n`êtes pas des espions, que vous êtes sincères; je vous rendrai votre frère, et vous pourrez librement parcourir le pays."
34. "Ary ento mankaty amiko ny zandrinareo faralahy, dia ho fantatro fa tsy mba mpisafo ianareo, fa olo-marina; dia hatolotro anareo ny rahalahinareo, ka dia hanao varotra eto amin' ny tany ianareo."
35. And it came to pass as they emptied their sacks, that, behold, every man's bundle of money was in his sack: and when both they and their father saw the bundles of money, they were afraid.
35. Lorsqu`ils vidèrent leurs sacs, voici, le paquet d`argent de chacun était dans son sac. Ils virent, eux et leur père, leurs paquets d`argent, et ils eurent peur.
35. "Ary izao no niseho, raha nandraraka izay tao anatin' ny lasakany izy ireo, dia, indro, ny volany am-ponosana samy teo anatin' ny lasakany avy; ary rehefa nahita ny volany am-ponosana izy sy ny rainy, dia natahotra."
36. And Jacob their father said unto them, Me have ye bereaved of my children: Joseph is not, and Simeon is not, and ye will take Benjamin away: all these things are against me.
36. Jacob, leur père, leur dit: Vous me privez de mes enfants! Joseph n`est plus, Siméon n`est plus, et vous prendriez Benjamin! C`est sur moi que tout cela retombe.
36. "Ary hoy Jakoba rainy taminy: Foananareo anaka aho; Josefa tsy eto intsony, Simeona tsy eto intsony, ary Benjamina halainareo; izaho no ozoin' izany rehetra izany."
37. And Reuben spake unto his father, saying, Slay my two sons, if I bring him not to thee: deliver him into my hand, and I will bring him to thee again.
37. "Ruben dit à son père: Tu feras mourir mes deux fils si je ne te ramène pas Benjamin; remets-le entre mes mains, et je te le ramènerai."
37. "Ary niteny tamin' ny rainy Robena ka nanao hoe: Vonoy ny zanako roa lahy, raha tsy entiko miverina aty aminao izy; atolory eto an-tanako izy, dia izaho no hitondra azy ho aty aminao indray."
38. And he said, My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he is left alone: if mischief befall him by the way in the which ye go, then shall ye bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave.
38. "Jacob dit: Mon fils ne descendra point avec vous; car son frère est mort, et il reste seul; s`il lui arrivait un malheur dans le voyage que vous allez faire, vous feriez descendre mes cheveux blancs avec douleur dans le séjour des morts."
38. "Ary hoy Jakoba: Tsy hidina hiaraka aminareo ny zanako; fa maty ny rahalahiny, ary izy irery no sisa, ary raha hisy loza hanjo azy any amin' ny lalana izay halehanareo, dia hampidininareo any am-pasana amin' alahelo ny volofotsiko."
