Prologue: Purpose and Theme
1. The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel;

2. To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding;
2. "Pour connaître la sagesse et l`instruction, Pour comprendre les paroles de l`intelligence;"

3. To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity;
3. "Pour recevoir des leçons de bon sens, De justice, d`équité et de droiture;"
3. "Hahazoana fananarana mampahahendry, dia fahamarinana sy rariny ary fahitsiana;"
4. To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.

4. Hanomezam-pahendrena ho an' ny kely saina ary fahalalana sy fisainana mazava ho an' ny zatovo.
5. A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:
5. Que le sage écoute, et il augmentera son savoir, Et celui qui est intelligent acquerra de l`habileté,
5. "Hihaino ny hendry ka hitombo fahalalana; ary ny manam-pahalalana hahazo toro-hevitra marina;"
6. To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.
6. Pour saisir le sens d`un proverbe ou d`une énigme, Des paroles des sages et de leurs sentences.
6. Hahafantarana ohabolana sy fanazavan-kevitra, ny tenin' ny hendry sy ny fomba fiteniny saro-pantarina.
7. The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
7. "La crainte de l`Éternel est le commencement de la science; Les insensés méprisent la sagesse et l`instruction."
7. "Ny fahatahorana an' i Jehovah no fiandoham-pahalalana; fa manamavo fahendrena sy toro-lalana ny adala."
Warning Against Enticement
8. My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:
8. "Écoute, mon fils, l`instruction de ton père, Et ne rejette pas l`enseignement de ta mère;"
8. Anaka, mihainoa ny toro-lalan-drainao, ary aza mahafoy ny lalàn-dreninao.
9. For they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck.
9. Car c`est une couronne de grâce pour ta tête, Et une parure pour ton cou.
9. Fa fehiloham-pahasoavana amin' ny lohanao izany ary rado amin' ny vozonao.
10. My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.
10. Mon fils, si des pécheurs veulent te séduire, Ne te laisse pas gagner.
10. Anaka, raha taomin' ny mpanota ianao, aza manaiky.
11. If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause:
11. S`ils disent: Viens avec nous! dressons des embûches, versons du sang, Tendons des pièges à celui qui se repose en vain sur son innocence,
11. "Raha hoy izy: Andeha hiaraka isika, aoka isika hanotrika handatsa-dra; andeha hamitsahantsika tsy ahoan-tsy ahoana ny tsy manan-tsiny;"
12. Let us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit:
12. "Engloutissons-les tout vifs, comme le séjour des morts, Et tout entiers, comme ceux qui descendent dans la fosse;"
12. "Aoka isika hitelina azy velona tahaka ny fasana; ary hanao azy teli-moka toy ny latsaka any an-davaka;"
13. We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil:
13. "Nous trouverons toute sorte de biens précieux, Nous remplirons de butin nos maisons;"
13. "Dia ho azontsika ny fananana sarobidy rehetra, ka hofenointsika babo ny tranontsika;"
14. Cast in thy lot among us; let us all have one purse:
14. Tu auras ta part avec nous, Il n`y aura qu`une bourse pour nous tous!
14. "Ampidiro ny anjaranao hiarahantsika; aoka ho iray ny kitapom-bolantsika rehetra."
15. My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path:
15. "Mon fils, ne te mets pas en chemin avec eux, Détourne ton pied de leur sentier;"
15. "Anaka, aza miara-dalana aminy ianao; arovy ny tongotrao tsy hankamin' ny alehany;"
16. For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood.
16. Car leurs pieds courent au mal, Et ils ont hâte de répandre le sang.
16. Fa mihazakazaka ho amin' ny ratsy ny tongony sady faingana handatsa-dra.
17. Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird.
17. "Mais en vain jette-t-on le filet Devant les yeux de tout ce qui a des ailes;"
17. Fa velarim-poana tokoa ny fandrika raha hitan' ny vorona.
18. And they lay wait for their own blood; they lurk privily for their own lives.
18. Et eux, c`est contre leur propre sang qu`ils dressent des embûches, C`est à leur âme qu`ils tendent des pièges.
18. "Fa ireny dia manotrika handatsaka ny ràn' ny tenany ihany; mamitsaka hahafaty ny tenany ihany izy."
19. So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; which taketh away the life of the owners thereof.
19. "Ainsi arrive-t-il à tout homme avide de gain; La cupidité cause la perte de ceux qui s`y livrent."
19. "Toy izany ny lalan' izay rehetra fatra-pila tombony; fa hipaoka ny ain' izay manana azy izany."
Warning Against Rejecting Wisdom
20. Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets:
20. La sagesse crie dans les rues, Elle élève sa voix dans les places:
20. "Miantso mafy eny ivelany ny fahendrena; manandratra ny feony eny an-dalambe izy."
21. She crieth in the chief place of concourse, in the openings of the gates: in the city she uttereth her words, saying,
21. "Elle crie à l`entrée des lieux bruyants; Aux portes, dans la ville, elle fait entendre ses paroles:"
21. "Miantso eny amin' ny toerana lehibe fivorian' ny vahoaka izy, eo anoloan' ny vavahady; eo an-tanàna no ilazany ny teniny hoe:"
22. How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge?
22. Jusqu`à quand, stupides, aimerez-vous la stupidité? Jusqu`à quand les moqueurs se plairont-ils à la moquerie, Et les insensés haïront-ils la science?
22. Ry kely saina, mandra-pahoviana no hitiavanareo ny fahadalana sy hiravoravoan' ny mpaniratsira amin' ny faniratsirany, ary hankahalan' ny adala ny fahalalana?
23. Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.
23. Tournez-vous pour écouter mes réprimandes! Voici, je répandrai sur vous mon esprit, Je vous ferez connaître mes paroles...
23. "Miverena ianareo ho amin' ny fananarako; indro, haidiko aminareo ny fanahiko, ary hampahafantariko anareo ny teniko."
24. Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded;
24. Puisque j`appelle et que vous résistez, Puisque j`étends ma main et que personne n`y prend garde,
24. "Satria efa niantso Aho, fa nandà ianareo; efa naninjitra ny tanako Aho, fa tsy nisy nandinika;"
25. But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof:
25. Puisque vous rejetez tous mes conseils, Et que vous n`aimez pas mes réprimandes,
25. Fa nolavinareo ny saina rehetra natolotro sady tsy nety nanaiky ny anatro ianareo:
26. I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh;
26. Moi aussi, je rirai quand vous serez dans le malheur, Je me moquerai quand la terreur vous saisira,
26. "Izaho kosa hihomehy amin' ny loza manjo anareo; handatsa aho, rehefa tonga ny mahatahotra anareo;"
27. When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you.
27. Quand la terreur vous saisira comme une tempête, Et que le malheur vous enveloppera comme un tourbillon, Quand la détresse et l`angoisse fondront sur vous.
27. Rehefa tonga ny mahatahotra anareo toy ny faharavana ary ny fandringanana anareo tahaka ny tadio, rehefa manjo anareo ny fahoriana sy ny fanahiana.
28. Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me:
28. "Alors ils m`appelleront, et je ne répondrai pas; Ils me chercheront, et ils ne me trouveront pas."
28. "Dia vao hiantso ahy izy ireo, fa tsy hamaly Aho; dia vao hitady Ahy fatratra izy, fa tsy ho hitany Aho."
29. For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD:
29. Parce qu`ils ont haï la science, Et qu`ils n`ont pas choisi la crainte de l`Éternel,
29. Satria nankahala ny fahalalana izy ary tsy nifidy ny fahatahorana an' i Jehovah,
30. They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof.
30. Parce qu`ils n`ont point aimé mes conseils, Et qu`ils ont dédaigné toutes mes réprimandes,
30. "Tsy nekeny ny saina natolotro; notsiratsirainy avokoa ny anatro rehetra,"
31. Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.
31. Ils se nourriront du fruit de leur voie, Et ils se rassasieront de leurs propres conseils,
31. Dia hihinana ny vokatry ny alehany izy ka ho voky ny fihendreny.
32. For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them.
32. "Car la résistance des stupides les tue, Et la sécurité des insensés les perd;"
32. Fa ny fihemoran' ny kely saina hahafaty azy ary ny fanambinana ny adala handringana azy.
33. But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.
33. Mais celui qui m`écoute reposera avec assurance, Il vivra tranquille et sans craindre aucun mal.
33. Fa izay mihaino ahy dia hitoetra tsy manana ahiahy, handry fahizay izy ka tsy hatahotra ny ratsy.
