Wisdom
1. A good name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of one's birth.
1. Une bonne réputation vaut mieux que le bon parfum, et le jour de la mort que le jour de la naissance.
1. "Tsara kokoa ny laza soa noho ny menaka manitra sarobidy; ary ny andro ahaterahana tsy mahaleo ny andro ahafatesana."
2. It is better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the house of feasting: for that is the end of all men; and the living will lay it to his heart.
2. "Mieux vaut aller dans une maison de deuil que d`aller dans une maison de festin; car c`est là la fin de tout homme, et celui qui vit prend la chose à coeur."
2. "Tsara kokoa ny mankao amin' ny trano misy fisaonana noho ny mankao amin' ny trano misy fanasana; fa ho amin' izany no hiafaran' ny olombelona rehetra; ary ny velona handatsaka am-po izany."
3. Sorrow is better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better.
3. "Mieux vaut le chagrin que le rire; car avec un visage triste le coeur peut être content."
3. "Tsara kokoa ny alahelo noho ny hehy; fa amin' ny alahelon' ny tarehy, dia ho tsara kokoa ny fo."
4. The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.
4. Le coeur des sages est dans la maison de deuil, et le coeur des insensés dans la maison de joie.
4. "Ny fon' ny hendry dia ao amin' ny trano misy fisaonana; fa ny fon' ny adala kosa dia ao amin' ny trano misy fifaliana."
5. It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools.
5. Mieux vaut entendre la réprimande du sage que d`entendre le chant des insensés.
5. Tsara kokoa ny mihaino ny anatra mafy ataon' ny hendry noho ny mihaino ny hiran' ny adala.
6. For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool: this also is vanity.
6. Car comme le bruit des épines sous la chaudière, ainsi est le rire des insensés. C`est encore là une vanité.
6. "Fa toy ny firefodrefotry ny tsilo eo ambanin' ny vilany, dia tahaka izany ny fihomehezan' ny adala; zava-poana koa izany."
7. Surely oppression maketh a wise man mad; and a gift destroyeth the heart.
7. L`oppression rend insensé le sage, et les présents corrompent le coeur.
7. "Ny fampahoriana dia mahavery saina ny hendry tokoa; ary ny kolikoly mahasimba ny fo."
8. Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.
8. "Mieux vaut la fin d`une chose que son commencement; mieux vaut un esprit patient qu`un esprit hautain."
8. "Tsara kokoa ny fiafaran' ny raharaha noho ny fiandohany; ary tsara kokoa ny mahari-po noho ny miavonavom-panahy."
9. Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools.
9. Ne te hâte pas en ton esprit de t`irriter, car l`irritation repose dans le sein des insensés.
9. "Aoka tsy halaky tezitra ny fanahinao; fa ny fahatezerana mitoetra ao an-tratran' ny adala."
10. Say not thou, What is the cause that the former days were better than these? for thou dost not enquire wisely concerning this.
10. Ne dis pas: D`où vient que les jours passés étaient meilleurs que ceux ci? Car ce n`est point par sagesse que tu demandes cela.
10. Aza manao hoe: Ahoana no mahatsara kokoa ny andro taloha noho ny ankehitriny? fa tsy amin' ny fahendrena no anontanianao izany.
11. Wisdom is good with an inheritance: and by it there is profit to them that see the sun.
11. La sagesse vaut autant qu`un héritage, et même plus pour ceux qui voient le soleil.
11. "Tsara ny fahendrena miaraka amin' ny lova; sady mahasoa ho an' izay mahita masoandro izany."
12. For wisdom is a defence, and money is a defence: but the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom giveth life to them that have it.
12. "Car à l`ombre de la sagesse on est abrité comme à l`ombre de l`argent; mais un avantage de la science, c`est que la sagesse fait vivre ceux qui la possèdent."
12. "Fa fialokalofana ny fahendrena ary fialokalofana ny vola; ary ny mahatsara ny fahalalana dia izao: Manome fiainana ho an' ny manana azy ny fahendrena."
13. Consider the work of God: for who can make that straight, which he hath made crooked?
13. Regarde l`oeuvre de Dieu: qui pourra redresser ce qu`il a courbé?
13. "Hevero ny asan' Andriamanitra; fa iza moa no mahahitsy izay nataony ho meloka?"
14. In the day of prosperity be joyful, but in the day of adversity consider: God also hath set the one over against the other, to the end that man should find nothing after him.
14. Au jour du bonheur, sois heureux, et au jour du malheur, réfléchis: Dieu a fait l`un comme l`autre, afin que l`homme ne découvre en rien ce qui sera après lui.
14. Amin' ny andro fanambinana dia mifalia, fa amin' ny andro mahory dia mieritrereta, fa nampifanandrifian' Andriamanitra ireo, mba tsy hahitan' ny olona akory izay ho avy aoriany.
15. All things have I seen in the days of my vanity: there is a just man that perisheth in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man that prolongeth his life in his wickedness.
15. J`ai vu tout cela pendant les jours de ma vanité. Il y a tel juste qui périt dans sa justice, et il y a tel méchant qui prolonge son existence dans sa méchanceté.
15. "Izao zavatra rehetra izao dia hitako tamin' ny androko mandalo foana: misy olo-marina maty amin' ny fahamarinany; ary misy olon-dratsy, izay ela velona amin' ny faharatsiany."
16. Be not righteous over much; neither make thyself over wise: why shouldest thou destroy thyself ?
16. Ne sois pas juste à l`excès, et ne te montre pas trop sage: pourquoi te détruirais-tu?
16. "Aza marina loatra, ary aza miseho ho hendry loatra; nahoana no hosimbanao ny tenanao?"
17. Be not over much wicked, neither be thou foolish: why shouldest thou die before thy time?
17. Ne sois pas méchant à l`excès, et ne sois pas insensé: pourquoi mourrais-tu avant ton temps?
17. "Aza ratsy loatra ianao, ary aza adala; nahoana no ho faty alohan' ny andronao ianao?"
18. It is good that thou shouldest take hold of this; yea, also from this withdraw not thine hand: for he that feareth God shall come forth of them all.
18. "Il est bon que tu retiennes ceci, et que tu ne négliges point cela; car celui qui craint Dieu échappe à toutes ces choses."
18. Tsara raha mitana izany ianao, nefa tsy mampiala ny tananao amin' izao, fa izay matahotra an' Andriamanitra dia ho afaka amin' izany rehetra izany.
19. Wisdom strengtheneth the wise more than ten mighty men which are in the city.
19. La sagesse rend le sage plus fort que dix chefs qui sont dans une ville.
19. Ny fahendrena mampahatanjaka ny hendry mihoatra noho ny lehilahy matanjaka folo ao an-tanàna.
20. For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.
20. Non, il n`y a sur la terre point d`homme juste qui fasse le bien et qui ne pèche jamais.
20. Fa tsy misy olona marina ambonin' ny tany izay manao ny tsara ka tsy manota.
21. Also take no heed unto all words that are spoken; lest thou hear thy servant curse thee:
21. "Ne fais donc pas attention à toutes les paroles qu`on dit, de peur que tu n`entendes ton serviteur te maudire;"
21. Koa aza mihainohaino ny teny rehetra tenenina, fandrao handre ny mpanomponao manozona anao ianao.
22. For oftentimes also thine own heart knoweth that thou thyself likewise hast cursed others.
22. car ton coeur a senti bien des fois que tu as toi-même maudit les autres.
22. Fa fantatry ny fonao fa na dia ny tenanao aza dia mba efa nanozona ny sasany matetika ihany koa.
23. All this have I proved by wisdom: I said, I will be wise; but it was far from me.
23. J`ai éprouvé tout cela par la sagesse. J`ai dit: Je serai sage. Et la sagesse est restée loin de moi.
23. "Izany rehetra izany dia nozahako tamin' ny fahendrena. Hoy aho: Ho hendry aho; kanjo lavitra ahy izany."
24. That which is far off, and exceeding deep, who can find it out?
24. Ce qui est loin, ce qui est profond, profond, qui peut l`atteindre?
24. Izay lavitra sady lalina indrindra, iza no mahatakatra azy?
25. I applied mine heart to know, and to search, and to seek out wisdom, and the reason of things, and to know the wickedness of folly, even of foolishness and madness:
25. Je me suis appliqué dans mon coeur à connaître, à sonder, et à chercher la sagesse et la raison des choses, et à connaître la folie de la méchanceté et la stupidité de la sottise.
25. Nampiasaiko ny foko hahalala sy hitady ary hikatsaka fahendrena sy izay anton-javatra, ary hahafantatra ny faharatsian' ny fahadalana, dia ny fahadalana sy ny fahaverezan-tsaina.
26. And I find more bitter than death the woman, whose heart is snares and nets, and her hands as bands: whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her.
26. "Et j`ai trouvé plus amère que la mort la femme dont le coeur est un piège et un filet, et dont les mains sont des liens; celui qui est agréable à Dieu lui échappe, mais le pécheur est pris par elle."
26. "Ka hitako fa mangidy noho ny fahafatesana ny vehivavy, izay fandrika sy harato ny fony, sady famatorana ny tanany; nefa izay ankasitrahan' Andriamanitra dia ho afa-mandositra azy, fa ny mpanota ihany no ho azony."
27. Behold, this have I found, saith the preacher, counting one by one, to find out the account:
27. "Voici ce que j`ai trouvé, dit l`Ecclésiaste, en examinant les choses une à une pour en saisir la raison;"
27. Indro, izao no hitako, hoy Mpitoriteny, raha nandinidinika ny zavatra tsirairay aho mba hahitana izay antony.
28. Which yet my soul seeketh, but I find not: one man among a thousand have I found; but a woman among all those have I not found.
28. "voici ce que mon âme cherche encore, et que je n`ai point trouvé. J`ai trouvé un homme entre mille; mais je n`ai pas trouvé une femme entre elles toutes."
28. "Izay mbola notadiavin' ny fanahiko fa tsy hitako: lehilahy iray tao amin' ny arivo no hitako; fa tsy nahita vehivavy iray teo amin' ireo rehetra ireo aho."
29. Lo, this only have I found, that God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions.
29. "Seulement, voici ce que j`ai trouvé, c`est que Dieu a fait les hommes droits; mais ils ont cherché beaucoup de détours."
29. Indro, izao ihany no hitako: nataon' Andriamanitra mahitsy ny olona, kanjo nitady zavatra maro izy.
