The Golden Calf
1. And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down out of the mount, the people gathered themselves together unto Aaron, and said unto him, Up, make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.
1. Le peuple, voyant que Moïse tardait à descendre de la montagne, s`assembla autour d`Aaron, et lui dit: Allons! fais-nous un dieu qui marche devant nous, car ce Moïse, cet homme qui nous a fait sortir du pays d`Égypte, nous ne savons ce qu`il est devenu.
1. "Ary rehefa hitan' ny olona fa nitaredretra tsy mbola nidina avy tao an-tendrombohitra Mosesy, dia niara-niangona ho eo amin' i Arona izy ireo ka nanao taminy hoe: Mitsangàna, manaova andriamanitra ho anay, izay handeha eo alohanay; fa ilay Mosesy iny, izay lehilahy nitondra antsika niakatra avy tany amin' ny tany Egypta, dia tsy fantatray izay nanjo azy."
2. And Aaron said unto them, Break off the golden earrings, which are in the ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters, and bring them unto me.
2. Aaron leur dit: Otez les anneaux d`or qui sont aux oreilles de vos femmes, de vos fils et de vos filles, et apportez-les-moi.

3. And all the people brake off the golden earrings which were in their ears, and brought them unto Aaron.
3. Et tous ôtèrent les anneaux d`or qui étaient à leurs oreilles, et ils les apportèrent à Aaron.

4. And he received them at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, after he had made it a molten calf: and they said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
4. Il les reçut de leurs mains, jeta l`or dans un moule, et fit un veau en fonte. Et ils dirent: Israël! voici ton dieu, qui t`a fait sortir du pays d`Égypte.

5. And when Aaron saw it, he built an altar before it; and Aaron made proclamation, and said, To morrow is a feast to the LORD.
5. Lorsqu`Aaron vit cela, il bâtit un autel devant lui, et il s`écria: Demain, il y aura fête en l`honneur de l`Éternel!
5. "Ary rehefa hitan' i Arona izany, dia nanorina alitara teo anoloany izy; dia nanao fanambarana Arona ka nilaza hoe: andro firavoravoana ho an' i Jehovah rahampitso."
6. And they rose up early on the morrow, and offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play.
6. "Le lendemain, ils se levèrent de bon matin, et ils offrirent des holocaustes et des sacrifices d`actions de grâces. Le peuple s`assit pour manger et pour boire; puis ils se levèrent pour se divertir."
6. "Dia nifoha maraina koa izy ireo nony ampitso, ka nanatitra fanatitra dorana sy nitondra fanati-pihavanana; ary nipetraka hihinana sy hisotro ny olona, dia nitsangana hilalao."
7. And the LORD said unto Moses, Go, get thee down; for thy people, which thou broughtest out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves:
7. "L`Éternel dit à Moïse: Va, descends; car ton peuple, que tu as fait sortir du pays d`Égypte, s`est corrompu."
7. "Ary hoy Jehovah tamin' i Mosesy: mandehana midina ianao; fa ny olonao, izay nentinao avy tany amin' ny tany Egypta, dia efa nandoto ny tenany."
8. They have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them: they have made them a molten calf, and have worshipped it, and have sacrificed thereunto, and said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which have brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
8. "Ils se sont promptement écartés de la voie que je leur avais prescrite; ils se sont fait un veau en fonte, ils se sont prosternés devant lui, ils lui ont offert des sacrifices, et ils ont dit: Israël! voici ton dieu, qui t`a fait sortir du pays d`Égypte."
8. "Nalaky nivily niala tamin' ny lalana izay nandidiako azy izy ireo; efa nanao ombilahy kely an' idina ho azy izy ireo, ary efa niankohoka taminy sy efa nanao sorona ho an' izany ka nanao hoe: ireo no andriamanitrao, ry Isiraely ô, izay nitondra anao niakatra avy tany amin' ny tany Egypta."
9. And the LORD said unto Moses, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people:
9. L`Éternel dit à Moïse: Je vois que ce peuple est un peuple au cou roide.
9. Ary hoy Jehovah tamin' i Mosesy: Efa hitako io firenena io, fa indro, firenena mafy hatoka izy.
10. Now therefore let me alone, that my wrath may wax hot against them, and that I may consume them: and I will make of thee a great nation.
10. "Maintenant laisse-moi; ma colère va s`enflammer contre eux, et je les consumerai; mais je ferai de toi une grande nation."
10. Ary ankehitriny, avelao aho, hirehetan' ny fahatezerako aminy ka hamongorako azy, dia hanao anao ho firenena lehibe Aho.
11. And Moses besought the LORD his God, and said, LORD, why doth thy wrath wax hot against thy people, which thou hast brought forth out of the land of Egypt with great power, and with a mighty hand?
11. Moïse implora l`Éternel, son Dieu, et dit: Pourquoi, ô Éternel! ta colère s`enflammerait-elle contre ton peuple, que tu as fait sortir du pays d`Égypte par une grande puissance et par une main forte?
11. Fa nifona tamin' i Jehovah Andriamaniny Mosesy ka nanao hoe: Jehovah ô, nahoana ny fahatezeranao no mirehitra amin' ny olonao, izay nentinao nivoaka avy tany amin' ny tany Egypta tamin' ny hery lehibe sy ny tanana mahery?
12. Wherefore should the Egyptians speak, and say, For mischief did he bring them out, to slay them in the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth? Turn from thy fierce wrath, and repent of this evil against thy people.
12. Pourquoi les Égyptiens diraient-ils: C`est pour leur malheur qu`il les a fait sortir, c`est pour les tuer dans les montagnes, et pour les exterminer de dessus la terre? Reviens de l`ardeur de ta colère, et repens-toi du mal que tu veux faire à ton peuple.
12. Nahoana ny Egyptiana no dia hiresaka ka hanao hoe: Ho amin' ny loza no nitondrany ireny hivoaka, hamonoany azy ireny any an-tendrombohitra sy handevonany azy tsy ho ambonin' ny tany? mialà amin' ny fahatezeranao mirehitra, ka aneneno ny loza hamelezana ny olonao.
13. Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, thy servants, to whom thou swarest by thine own self, and saidst unto them, I will multiply your seed as the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have spoken of will I give unto your seed, and they shall inherit it for ever.
13. Souviens-toi d`Abraham, d`Isaac et d`Israël, tes serviteurs, auxquels tu as dit, en jurant par toi-même: Je multiplierai votre postérité comme les étoiles du ciel, je donnerai à vos descendants tout ce pays dont j`ai parlé, et ils le posséderont à jamais.
13. "Tsarovy Abrahama sy Isaka ary Isiraely mpanomponao, izay nianiananao tamin' ny tenanao sy nilazanao hoe: Hahamaro ny taranakareo ho tahaka ny kintana eny amin' ny lanitra Aho; ary ity tany rehetra izay nolazaiko ity dia homeko ny taranakareo, ary handova izany mandrakizay izy ireo."
14. And the LORD repented of the evil which he thought to do unto his people.
14. Et l`Éternel se repentit du mal qu`il avait déclaré vouloir faire à son peuple.
14. Ary Jehovah dia nanenina ny amin' ny loza izay nokasainy hamelezana ny olony.
15. And Moses turned, and went down from the mount, and the two tables of the testimony were in his hand: the tables were written on both their sides; on the one side and on the other were they written.
15. "Moïse retourna et descendit de la montagne, les deux tables du témoignage dans sa main; les tables étaient écrites des deux côtés, elles étaient écrites de l`un et de l`autre côté."
15. "Ary nihodina Mosesy ka nidina avy tao an-tendrombohitra; ary teny an-tanany ny vato fisaka roa nisy ny Vavolombelona: voasoratra teo amin' ny lafiny roa ny vato fisaka: teo amin' ny lafiny iray sy teo amin' ny lafiny ilany no voasoratra."
16. And the tables were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, graven upon the tables.
16. Les tables étaient l`ouvrage de Dieu, et l`écriture était l`écriture de Dieu, gravée sur les tables.
16. Ary ny vato fisaka dia asan' Andriamanitra, ary ny soratra dia soratr' Andriamanitra, voasoratra teo amin' ny vato fisaka.
17. And when Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, he said unto Moses, There is a noise of war in the camp.
17. Josué entendit la voix du peuple, qui poussait des cris, et il dit à Moïse: Il y a un cri de guerre dans le camp.
17. Ary rehefa ren' i Josoa ny tabataban' ny olona izay nihorakoraka, dia hoy izy tamin' i Mosesy: Misy tabataban' ady atsy an-toby.
18. And he said, It is not the voice of them that shout for mastery, neither is it the voice of them that cry for being overcome: but the noise of them that sing do I hear.
18. "Moïse répondit: Ce n`est ni un cri de vainqueurs, ni un cri de vaincus; ce que j`entends, c`est la voix de gens qui chantent."
18. "Fa hoy kosa izy: tsy feon' ireo mihoby ho an' ny mahery izany, na feon' ireo mitomany noho ny faharesena; fa tabataban' ny mihira no reko."
19. And it came to pass, as soon as he came nigh unto the camp, that he saw the calf, and the dancing: and Moses' anger waxed hot, and he cast the tables out of his hands, and brake them beneath the mount.
19. "Et, comme il approchait du camp, il vit le veau et les danses. La colère de Moïse s`enflamma; il jeta de ses mains les tables, et les brisa au pied de la montagne."
19. "Ary izao no niseho, raha vao nanakaiky ny toby izy, dia nahita ny ombilahy kely sy ny dihy; ary nirehitra ny fahatezeran' i Mosesy, dia natsipiny avy teny an-tanany ny vato fisaka ka novakiny teo am-bodin' ny tendrombohitra."
20. And he took the calf which they had made, and burnt it in the fire, and ground it to powder, and strawed it upon the water, and made the children of Israel drink of it.
20. "Il prit le veau qu`ils avaient fait, et le brûla au feu; il le réduisit en poudre, répandit cette poudre à la surface de l`eau, et fit boire les enfants d`Israël."
20. Dia nalainy ilay ombilahy kely efa nataon' ireo ka nodorany tamin' ny afo, ary notorotoroiny ho vovoka, dia nafafiny tambonin' ny rano izany ka nampisotroiny ny Zanak' Isiraely.
21. And Moses said unto Aaron, What did this people unto thee, that thou hast brought so great a sin upon them?
21. Moïse dit à Aaron: Que t`a fait ce peuple, pour que tu l`aies laissé commettre un si grand péché?
21. Ary hoy Mosesy tamin' i Arona: Inona no nataon' ireto olona ireto taminao no nitondranao izao fahotana lehibe izao taminy?
22. And Aaron said, Let not the anger of my lord wax hot: thou knowest the people, that they are set on mischief.
22. Aaron répondit: Que la colère de mon seigneur ne s`enflamme point! Tu sais toi-même que ce peuple est porté au mal.
22. "Dia hoy Arona: Aoka tsy hirehitra ny fahatezeranao tompoko; ianao mahalala ny olona, fa mirona ho amin' ny ratsy izy ireo."
23. For they said unto me, Make us gods, which shall go before us: for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.
23. "Ils m`ont dit: Fais-nous un dieu qui marche devant nous; car ce Moïse, cet homme qui nous a fait sortir du pays d`Égypte, nous ne savons ce qu`il est devenu."
23. "Fa hoy izy ireo tamiko: Manaova andriamanitra ho anay, izay handeha eo alohanay; fa ilay Mosesy iny, izay lehilahy nitondra antsika niakatra avy tany amin' ny tany Egypta, dia tsy fantatray izay nanjo azy."
24. And I said unto them, Whosoever hath any gold, let them break it off. So they gave it me: then I cast it into the fire, and there came out this calf.
24. "Je leur ai dit: Que ceux qui ont de l`or, s`en dépouillent! Et ils me l`ont donné; je l`ai jeté au feu, et il en est sorti ce veau."
24. "Ary hoy aho taminy: Na zovy na zovy manana volamena, aoka izy hanaisotra izany. Dia nomeny ahy izany; ary natsipiko tao anaty afo izany, ka io ombilahy kely io no nivoaka avy tao."
25. And when Moses saw that the people were naked; (for Aaron had made them naked unto their shame among their enemies:)
25. Moïse vit que le peuple était livré au désordre, et qu`Aaron l`avait laissé dans ce désordre, exposé à l`opprobre parmi ses ennemis.
25. "Ary rehefa hitan' i Mosesy fa nitanjaka ny olona; (fa Arona efa nampitanjaka azy ireo ho henatra ho azy eo amin' ny fahavalony),"
26. Then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, Who is on the LORD's side? let him come unto me. And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together unto him.
26. Moïse se plaça à la porte du camp, et dit: A moi ceux qui sont pour l`Éternel! Et tous les enfants de Lévi s`assemblèrent auprès de lui.
26. Dia nijanona teo amin' ny vavahadin' ny toby Mosesy ka nanao hoe: Iza no an' i Jehovah? Mankanesa aty amiko. Ary ny zanakalahin' i Levy rehetra dia niara-niangona teo aminy.
27. And he said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Put every man his sword by his side, and go in and out from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay every man his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbour.
27. "Il leur dit: Ainsi parle l`Éternel, le Dieu d`Israël: Que chacun de vous mette son épée au côté; traversez et parcourez le camp d`une porte à l`autre, et que chacun tue son frère, son parent."
27. Dia hoy izy tamin' ireo: Izao no lazain' i Jehovah, Andriamanitry ny Isiraely: Samia manao ny sabany eo am-balahany avy, dia midira sy mivoaha amin' ny isam-bavahady manerana ny toby, ary samia mamono ny rahalahiny avy sy ny sakaizany avy ary ny namany avy.
28. And the children of Levi did according to the word of Moses: and there fell of the people that day about three thousand men.
28. "Les enfants de Lévi firent ce qu`ordonnait Moïse; et environ trois mille hommes parmi le peuple périrent en cette journée."
28. Dia nanao araka ny tenin' i Mosesy ny zanak' i Levy, ka ny lavo tamin' ny olona tamin' izany andro izany dia tokony ho telo arivo lahy.
29. For Moses had said, Consecrate yourselves today to the LORD, even every man upon his son, and upon his brother; that he may bestow upon you a blessing this day.
29. Moïse dit: Consacrez-vous aujourd`hui à l`Éternel, même en sacrifiant votre fils et votre frère, afin qu`il vous accorde aujourd`hui une bénédiction.
29. Fa Mosesy efa nilaza hoe: Manokana ny tenanareo ho an' i Jehovah anio, eny, samia mamono ny zanany lahy sy ny rahalahiny, mba hahazoany manome fitahiana ho anareo anio.
30. And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses said unto the people, Ye have sinned a great sin: and now I will go up unto the LORD; peradventure I shall make an atonement for your sin.
30. Le lendemain, Moïse dit au peuple: Vous avez commis un grand péché. Je vais maintenant monter vers l`Éternel: j`obtiendrai peut-être le pardon de votre péché.
30. "Ary izao no niseho nony ampitso, hoy Mosesy tamin' ny olona: Efa nanao ota lehibe ianareo, ary ankehitriny dia hiakatra ho ao amin' i Jehovah aho; angamba hahazo hanao fanavotana ny amin' ny fahotanareo aho."
31. And Moses returned unto the LORD, and said, Oh, this people have sinned a great sin, and have made them gods of gold.
31. Moïse retourna vers l`Éternel et dit: Ah! ce peuple a commis un grand péché. Ils se sont fait un dieu d`or.
31. Dia niverina ho ao amin' i Jehovah Mosesy, ka nanao hoe: Indro, efa nanao ota lehibe ity firenena ity, ka efa nanao andriamanitra volamena ho azy.
32. Yet now, if thou wilt forgive their sin; and if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book which thou hast written.
32. Pardonne maintenant leur péché! Sinon, efface-moi de ton livre que tu as écrit.
32. "Ary ankehitriny, enga anie ka hamela ny fahotany Ianao; fa raha tsy izany, mifona aminao aho, koseho aho tsy ho ao amin' ny bokinao izay nosoratanao."
33. And the LORD said unto Moses, Whosoever hath sinned against me, him will I blot out of my book.
33. L`Éternel dit à Moïse: C`est celui qui a péché contre moi que j`effacerai de mon livre.
33. Fa hoy Jehovah tamin' i Mosesy: Na iza na iza nanota tamiko, dia izy no hokosehiko tsy ho ao amin' ny bokiko.
34. Therefore now go, lead the people unto the place of which I have spoken unto thee: behold, mine Angel shall go before thee: nevertheless in the day when I visit I will visit their sin upon them.
34. Va donc, conduis le peuple où je t`ai dit. Voici, mon ange marchera devant toi, mais au jour de ma vengeance, je les punirai de leur péché.
34. "Noho izany dia mandehana ankehitriny, tariho ny olona ho any amin' ny toerana izay efa nolazaiko taminao; indro, ny Anjeliko no handeha eo alohanao; kanefa amin' izay andro hamaliako dia hamaly azy noho ny fahotany Aho."
35. And the LORD plagued the people, because they made the calf, which Aaron made.
35. L`Éternel frappa le peuple, parce qu`il avait fait le veau, fabriqué par Aaron.
35. Ary Jehovah namely ny olona, satria nanao ny ombilahy kely izy ireo, dia ilay nataon' i Arona.
